SCN BICESTER 98 BLETCHLY 0 BY PAUL CHRISP
Bicester entertained their supporters with a scintillating display of running rugby as they totally outgunned visitors Bletchley in all phases of play. The visiting forwards were overwhelmed in both the set piece scrums and line outs and the loose play, whilst their defence was constantly overstretched by the slick interpassing and clinical finishing of the lively Bicester backs. 2nd row Andrew Faulkner scored a 1st half hat-trick of tries and man of the match Tevita Naleca, Charlie Bethell and Dan Spencer scored 2 tries a piece, in the total of 15 tries, 10 of which were converted.
Full back Tom Miles scored one try and landed 8 conversions and a penalty goal, with Dan Spencer contributing 2 conversions late in the 2nd half. The visitors made very little headway against the rigourous home defence, and after conceding 53 points in the opening session, they surrendered a further 45 points in the 2nd half.
As no.8 Dan Spencer picked up a loose ball and charged forward down the left side, the visitors infringed, and Tom Miles stroked over the penalty kick after 3 minutes play. Then Bletchley were shunted backwards off their own scrum, Dave Hampton linked with Lemeki Valevou and Charlie Bethell, for flanker Francois Weise to put lock Andrew Faulkner across to the left corner, Miles converted and soon from flanker Jack Horwoods line out take on the right, Bethell combined with Peter Tarrega and Dave Hampton in a sweeping Crossfield move which resulted in Tom Miles crossing in the left corner. He added the extras from the 22 metre line, close to touch on the left and straightwaway, hooker George Withers surged ahead on the right before prop Dave Lawther sent Faulkner crashing over in the corner for an unconverted try. Immediately, from Valevou’s strong running on the left, winger Tevita Naleca raced under the posts for a try, converted by Miles and Bicester had earned their bonus point, after 24 minutes of play. Then after prop Liam Corton, playing his first league game for the 1st team, had snaffled a loose ball near half-way on the right, fellow loose head prop Dave Lawther embarked on a spectacular 40 metre zig-zag path to the try line. Miles converted both this and the following try, when prop Corton won a turnover for his side, before Spencer joined Lawther and Weise to release lock Faulkner under the posts for his 3rd try. Fly half Dean Williams was then off target with a penalty chance for Bletchley and back came rampart Bicester, winning a Bletchley scrum against the head, with no.8 Dan Spencer touching down for his 1st try. Miles was off target with both this conversion and the next one, on the stroke of half time, after Spencer broke from a scrum to sprint past several defenders on a 4o metre run to the right of the posts, for his brace of tries.
The rout continued after the break with Naleca racing across for hisbrace, following good play by Faulkner, Hampton and jack Horwood. Miles converted both this one and the ensuing try when Spencers quick penalty move set up a try for winger Peter Tarrega on the right. From another turnover fly-half Charlie Bethell sped 40 metres to the try line for a try which Miles converted with a 35 metre kick. Next from a scrum awarded to Bicester, following a crooked line out throw by the visitors, replacement George Upton crossed in the left corner for an unconverted try. Ten minutes later Bethell completed his brace of tries, after yet another Bicester turnover. This time Dan Spencer added the conversion. Next Bethell combined with Upton to send centre Dave Hampton overfor an unconverted try. Finally from a line out Naleca, Valevou andf Upton worked the ball down the left side to put Francois Weise under the posts for a try which Spencer also converted.
